Rajaa, tell us about how it all started. How did you come up with the idea of the business?
Rajaa: Well, like most girls, I would enjoy spending 3 to 4 hours a day looking at dresses online - the Internet offered so much more unique and beautiful styles than local physical stores.

Once when my cousin's wedding day was approaching I saw how stressful it was for her to find the wedding dress of her dream in local stores. So I decided to help her and started browsing all over the internet for the special dress. Soon I found that gorgeous dress she absolutely loved. But it turned out that the idea of buying a dress online seemed intimidating for her, so she eventually chose to rent one from a local shop, though I knew it wasn't the one she really wanted. I was very determined, and without her knowing it, I bought the dress she loved from the online store anyway. When it arrived, she saw it live and fell in love with it. She immediately returned the dress she had rented back to the local shop

On my cousin's big day, all our family and guests were fascinated and very intrigued by the dress she was wearing - everybody kept asking where we got it from. It was that day when I made my big decision - I was going to start selling online the most elegant dresses I knew every girl wanted.
That's a truly inspiring story! Were there any challenges you faced when you first started?
Rajaa: As it was the case with my cousin, people don't get to trust an online store easily, especially when they are not familiar with your store. However, the look and feel of your website and its usability can go a long way to provide that great first impression about the quality of the products and service you provide. We know it and we are still working very hard on it by adding professional apps that help us create that great first impression with visitors.
How did improving site search impact your business?
Rajaa: I believe that on-site search is one of the most important features of an online store. It defines the customer shopping experience. However, very soon after we launched we found that the native search functionality to be lacking, so we started looking for an enhanced search solution and found Searchanise.

We have an active Instagram account where we put out our best offers and provide an ID code for each advertised item in the post description. With Searchanise, it is now possible for customers to search our store using an ID code of the item they liked on our Instagram. And that's a real sales booster!
The new advanced search has also impacted our conversion rate. Before using the Searchanise app, our overall online store conversion rate was just 0.33%. Now, with Searchanise integrated, our conversion rate is 37.65%, which is awesome!
You've been around for almost five years and have seen some great results. Tell us how you measure success?
Rajaa: Well, I think the number of returning customers is the true measure of success. Working hard on the customer experience from the moment they land on your website up to when they receive their order on their doorstep is something very important.

If your customers are happy with the experience they have had with you, they are likely to come back. And if they come back, they will buy more because they have dealt with you before and now trust you. When that happens often that means you are getting successful.
Despite the events of 2020, Online Markat has remained relevant and is having a successful year. How do you manage to sustain the business growth?
Rajaa: Well, we live in the time where everything is changing and developing at a fast pace. I think entrepreneurs shall be ready for changes and always have a backup plan.

I push myself to think outside the box in order to stay trendy and unique - I believe this skill is the key to keep any business going, especially through trying times.

With increasing pressures from new competition, we have to make every effort to put ourselves out there in the front of our target audience, keep engaging with customers and find out what they like and dislike about our services.
We also keep an eye out for tools and apps on Shopify marketplace that we can utilize for optimizing our business processes and help get Onlinemarkat.com evolved in the future. But the thing with a new third-party app is that you don't know how well it's going to work with other apps you are using. That's why we are happy to use Searchanise because it integrates well with most popular Shopify apps.
What words of advice would you like to share with anyone who's running their e-commerce store?
Rajaa: Customers are your first priority. When setting up a website, customer onsite experience is the key thing that should matter. And, in order to engage and convert customers, you need to care about every single detail in your online store that would show how professional you and your team are. Mastering this takes time and effort and doesn't happen overnight. Don't be discouraged if you fail in some things, just keep learning and trying new things.
